One Officer Involved in Cases That Cost City $1.2 Million

$1.2 million in Payouts Involving One Officer

The Baltimore City Board of Estimates has approved a $147,000.00 settlement payment to Plaintiffs who alleged excessive violence by five Baltimore City police officers. Interestingly, one office, Nicholas Chapman, has been involved in several cases that have resulted in $1.2 million payments to Plaintiffs. The Baltimore Sun reports, that the jury found that the officers had "acted with actual malice". Such a finding is fatal to any defense the officers may have had as to the reasonableness of their actions. In fact, the jury can then impose punitive damages against the officers which it did to the tune of $40,000.00.
